The Golf Courses
Royal Porthcawl Golf Club
Royal Porthcawl Golf Club is located in Rest Bay between Swansea and Cardiff, on a stretch of coastline that borders the Bristol Channel. Founded as a 9-hole course in 1891 by Royal North Devon’s professional Charles Gibson the club relocated 4 years later to its current location with King Edward VII granting Royal patronage in 1909.
Throughout its history, Royal Porthcawl has hosted many prestigious tournaments including the Seniors Open Championship, the Walker Cup in 1995, the Curtis Cup in 1964, the British Open in 1961 plus a total of 6 Amateur Championships, and we are looking forward to it hosting the AIG Women’s Open in 2025
Pennard Golf Links
It doesn’t take long to understand why Pennard is known as ‘the links in the sky’. Though its undulating hummocks, dunes and hillocks bear all the hallmarks of a classic coastal course, it is in fact perched 200 feet above sea level, set on limestone cliffs, offering stunning views of Gower’s Three Cliffs Bay.
Pennard’s golf lives up to the setting. Approached via a bleak moor you reach gorse-lined, windswept fairways offering a constantly shifting challenge. The par-four 7th is a particular highlight, demanding a drive between the ruins of a 13th-century church, the remains of a 12th-century castle, and often grazing cattle. You’ll go a long way to beat golf with such a dramatic backdrop.
Measuring under 6,300 yards from the tips, time and again this delightful course provides holes of modest length that confound the thoughtless golfer and reward the skilful one. All this with a history dating back to 1886 and laid out by the five-times Open Champion, James Braid, who stated that he had “never seen a better piece of natural land for the game of golf.”
Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club
Affectionately known as ‘P and K’, Pyle and Kenfig is cut into the majestic sand dunes of the stretch of coastline that also hosts Royal Porthcawl. The great humps, hollows and mounds are complemented by the tall rough to create a magical golfing environment. A proud host to the Qualifying Round for the Seniors Open Championship in 2023.
AIG Women’s Open – Royal Porthcawl 30th July – 3rd August 2025
The AIG Women’s Open will be staged at Royal Porthcawl in 2025. It will be the first time the Championship will have been hosted there, and also the first time it will have been held in Wales
The Championship course will welcome the world’s best golfers to the stunning Welsh coast for what is set to be a brilliant Championship, and the 49th playing of the AIG Women’s Open overall.
Royal Porthcawl has a long and storied history of hosting top-level golf including The Amateur Championship on six occasions, the Walker Cup in 1995, the Curtis Cup in 1964 and The Senior Open presented by Rolex in 2014, 2017 and 2023.
The sea can be seen from every hole and with all of them running in different directions, the wind is a constant factor.
